Working on specific tactical patterns in training helps players automate decision-making so they can apply it more effectively under match pressure—without hesitation and with confidence.
This sequence trains a 4-ball pattern, fed by the coach (or another player), designed to reproduce a realistic defense-to-attack transition.
The balls are fed from a basket by the coach to allow the sequence to be repeated multiple times, with no uncertainty, so the pattern becomes fully ingrained.
Setup
The player positions themselves in defense on their usual side of the court (here the example is for a right-side player, but the same drill can be performed symmetrically on the left).
The coach stands at the back of the court in the middle with a basket of balls.
Sequence of play
The coach feeds the first ball deep to the middle of the court, which the player hits as a lob after the back glass—high, cross-court, and deep.
The player then receives a cross-court ball (imagining the lob comes back with a bandeja or bajada cross-court), which they counter with an aggressive forehand aimed at the opponent’s feet.
The player moves directly to the net and plays a firm backhand volley down the line into the corner.
Finally, they finish with a forehand volley at medium height, aiming either to take the ball out by 4, or to finish with a chancletazo or a volley into the side mesh.
Objective of the drill
The player performs this sequence about 5 to 10 times, then alternates with their partner (if there are multiple players practicing).
Take a short break of a few seconds between each series to recover and reflect on correcting mistakes from the previous set.
Players must put the same intensity into these sequences as they would in a match in order to get the full benefit from the drill.
In a real match, the sequence will rarely be identical, but practicing this drill allows players to anticipate and automate the pattern, so they can execute it instinctively during competition.
