The drop shot is an attacking shot based on precision in padel, designed to take as much pace as possible off the ball so that it bounces just over the net, catching opponents off guard and forcing them to move quickly forwards towards the front of the court.
An effective drop shot relies on a compact movement, a downward racket path followed by a slight upward movement, backspin and excellent control over the pace of the ball. The aim is to take as much pace off the ball as possible while maintaining control of its trajectory.
The aim of this session is to progressively develop the key technical elements of the drop shot, from controlling a moving ball and absorbing its pace to executing an accurate drop shot, before working on a sharply angled cross-court variation with pronounced backspin to send the ball out through the side door.
The session consists of six progressive drills, allowing the player to develop the racket movement, touch, backspin and accuracy separately before combining these elements into a complete, controlled drop shot.
➡️ This session breaks down the drop shot technique in padel step by step.
1️⃣ The first progression focuses on learning the downward racket movement followed by a slight upward movement, aiming to catch a ball tossed into the air and bring it to rest directly on the racket face.
2️⃣ The second progression involves executing short drop shots in front of the player while imparting backspin on the ball.
3️⃣ The third drill focuses on absorbing the pace of a ball fed by the coach, using a short, controlled movement to slow the ball down enough to catch it with the non-dominant hand.
4️⃣ The fourth progression involves combining an initial ball control touch with a proper drop shot just over the net, first slowing down the incoming ball before playing a drop shot with a second contact.
5️⃣ The fifth progression focuses on executing an accurate drop shot directly from a ball fed by the coach, using good control to make the ball bounce inside a target positioned just over the net.
6️⃣ Finally, the sixth progression introduces a sharply angled cross-court drop shot with pronounced backspin, maintaining a compact movement while attempting to send the ball out through the side door after it bounces.
✅ Through these six drills, the aim is to progressively develop a short, accurate and controlled drop shot, executed with a compact movement, effective backspin and excellent pace control, mastering each key technical element separately before combining them into an effective shot, culminating in a sharply angled cross-court drop shot with backspin.
