This exercise is the fifth and final progression in learning the X4 smash technique. After practising the movement and sending the ball out over the 4-metre back glass from easier feeds, the player now puts this technique into practice in a match-like situation.
The objective is to recognise a high, short ball that offers an opportunity to finish the point with an X4 smash, then move quickly into position to execute the shot effectively.
This final progression brings together reading the ball’s trajectory, footwork adjustments, a high contact point and the vertical wrist movement, allowing the player to execute an X4 smash from their usual position on the court.
